16-40

Monday's print column attempted to find a silver lining in the loss of two of the Twins regular outfielders to injury. At least the outfield defense will be better.

And the pitching staff allowed 11 homers to Tampa Bay in the four-game weekend series. It does not matter if  the center fielder is Danny Santana, Byron Buxton or Oswaldo Arcia; nobody can defend the second deck.

So the Twins go into today's off day bearing a .286 winning percentage, 16-40, just a bit more than a third of the way through the season. That is the worst record in the majors, slightly worse than that of the Atlanta Braves, and the Braves were expected to be awful. It was certainly possible to doubt the optimism that accompanied the Twins at the end of spring training, but I (still) do not believe it is truly this bad a club.

Starting to get there though.
