The Mauer talks and unnamed sources

Mark Rosen (WCCO) says (citing an source he doesn't name) that there's agreement on the framework of a 10-year contract between Joe Mauer and the Twins.

Peter Gammons tweets: "Mauer contract is far from done, and could be quite some time before it's completed."

Who's right? Neither. Both. Either.

Wake me, boys, when you have sources you can name. Until then, you can be making this up or being fed something by somebody with an axe to grind.

It'll be news when it's done and gossip until then.

  1. Twins would be crazy to accept ten years. Not many catcher retain their elite offensive status into their mid-to-late 30s.

  2. Not many catchers (actually, no other catchers) have won an AL batting title.

Mauer has three, and he's 26 years old. This contract will be -and should be - unprecedented for a catcher, or any player for that matter. The Twins can't afford upwards of $25 million per year, so they'll have to offer Mauer a longer deal to compensate.

Overpaying on the last 1-3 years of the deal is the price you pay for a HOF-er in their prime.

  3. Even if he can't continue to play catcher every day in a few years, I think his offensive skills will continue, and he'll still be hitting over 300 when he's 40. Joe is worth a long, expensive contract. He's already obviously a player of the quality of such hallowed names as Killebrew, Oliva, Carew, and Puckett. He deserves a "legacy" contract.
